Today was the main day for carnival parades in Greece. This village along with many others across the country had a parade. There were simple floats made from old cars and vans, costumes and music.

There was free beer and cheap bbq served by the priests. Stew and loukmades (deep fried dough balls soaked in honey) all the money raised will go towards the village fund.

The floats are all made from very old vehicles and are decorated a few days before. There’s mainly lots of cardboard and packing foam stuck to a simple iron frame and painted. The whole atmosphere is one of fun, with groups poking fun at politics and each other.

There were lots of reports that it was going to rain but the weather was wonderful in the end. I really need to start remembering to put sunscreen on before going out from now on.

The majority dressed up and enjoyed the day and there were some wonderful costumes. The most entertaining was a wedding scene on the back of a Lindos taxi. The bride being a man in drag and the groom a woman with slicked back hair and a painted unibrow. I couldn’t get near it to take a picture as everyone wanted to see what was going on. They performed a ceremony and had a traditional Greek dance with their guests. Most of which also seemed to be men in drag.

There’s always a mixture of expats and locals, with a couple of expat floats. The biggest this year was an American Indian themed float complete with Tepee, squaws and warriors.

The parade ended with balloons being released. Though it took a while to set them free as they’d been too securely hung over the road. There was then drinking and dancing until late. I headed home late afternoon and could still hear the street party going as the sun set.

The prompt for today was ‘this is funny’ and with the carnival there were plenty of chances to take funny pictures. What I found in most of the images wasn’t so much funny as the fun and joy that everyone was having.

I was tempted by the priest serving beer. Though that’s starting to seem more normal to me now it’s not a something you’d have seen an imam doing in the Middle East!

A man in drag with hairy legs and armpits I will always find funny. This guy also had trouble working out how the dress and bra worked but was clearly having fun too. What you can’t see in this pic is that he had matching trainers on.

this is funny

Today has been a lot of fun. The carnival this year was later as the date moves with Easter so D missed it. We’ve enjoyed taking part in the past and hopefully will again soon. The larger carnivals on the mainland and in Crete sound wonderful maybe one year we’ll go and see how they do it there. But for a small village these guys put on a great day.

Tomorrow is clean Monday a national holiday, and maybe a chance for some more fun. I hope you’ve had a good day where ever you are in the world?
